See how the lava "sheds" its skin and attaches itself to the leaf. As it dries the "shell" becomes hard and more orangeish. I actually looks a bit like a shrived up dead caterpillar or grub. As the ladybug emerges from the shell it does not have spots yet. My bushes are covered in these little empty "shells" now. Most of the ladybugs and eaten their fill and have moved on.
